On December 16, 2022, the final of the Tsinghua Technology Innovation BMW China IT Metaverse Creative Competition was successfully held in the form of a virtual metaverse conference. This event is launched by the Tsinghua Technology Innovation BMW China IT Innovation Joint Challenge Project Laboratory, jointly initiated by the Tsinghua University Technology Innovation Research Center and BMW China IT Office, with strong support from the Tsinghua University Art and Technology Innovation Base. The activity aims to select excellent ideas and create innovative business solutions in the metaverse for practical application scenarios around automotive products and services. Eight teams composed of current students and alumni from Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management, School of Fine Arts, School of Journalism, and Department of Automation, as well as students from Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and other universities, are nominated for the finals to compete for the 90000 yuan cash prize.
As the concept of the metaverse gradually enters the public eye and even becomes a new direction of focus for many industries, the automotive industry is constantly exploring how the metaverse can empower the industry and affect people's future travel and life. The creative proposals collected this time open up three application scenarios - brand and marketing, production and logistics, and vehicle experience. Combining virtual reality, AI and cloud computing, virtual characters and digital twins, 5G blockchain and other technological directions, we will select the future brand officer, future executive officer, and future experience officer to oversee the future.
This conference is different from the past, as it is the first time using metaverse space to support the presentation of events. The Metaverse Creative Competition invited Professor Li Jizhen, Vice Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, to give an opening speech as a digital virtual human. He expressed gratitude to BMW Group for being a member of the Advisory Committee of Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management, which has long supported the development of scientific research and innovation education at the university. He was also pleased to see the first phase of the Tsinghua Technology Innovation BMW China IT Joint Innovation Project Laboratory. In recent years, Tsinghua Management and BMW Group have benefited greatly from various innovative collaborations in the fields of education and scientific research, from school enterprise cooperation. He hopes that the cooperation between the two sides can continue to deepen and accumulate more practical innovative achievements.
In his speech, Alexander Angelbrandt, BMW China IT Chief Information Officer, welcomed everyone and thanked the mentors for joining and the students for their participation. He also emphasized the importance of innovation for BMW China IT Innovation Department and expressed his expectations for the innovative solution development achievements of the Tsinghua student team in the past few months.
The final judging panel is composed of Li Jizhen, Vice Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, Fu Zhiyong, Associate Professor and Director of the Art and Technology Innovation Base at the School of Fine Arts at Tsinghua University, Yuan Chengyin, Director and General Manager of the National New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Center, Liu Bo, General Manager and Managing Partner of Qidi Star Venture Capital, Zhang Lihao, Deputy Director of the Department of Product Design at the School of Design at Jiangnan University, and Du Xia, Researcher at the Center for Dynamic Competition and Innovation Strategy at Tsinghua University, BMW China IT Alexander Angelbrandt (Chief Information Officer, China IT), Catherine Xiao (Head of Digital Technology and Platforms), Chen Yu (Senior Manager of IT Governance&Infrastructure), Leon Wang (Head of CBS Region China), Harry Qi (Head of OTD), Diana Zhang (Lead of China DTO), Feng Nan (Senior Manager of Business development and Strategy) are composed of judges who evaluate project innovation Professional evaluations were conducted on the feasibility of products/services, business value, and on-site demonstrations, and the selection process was fair and impartial.
In the afternoon of that day, eight teams demonstrated their solutions in detail in the metaverse space, focusing on the practical application scenarios of the metaverse concept in automotive products and services. They proposed innovative and feasible solutions for their chosen themes and completed a relatively complete project design. And exchanged innovative concepts, application scenarios, and possibilities of the project with the judges and guests.
Fu Zhiyong, Associate Professor of the School of Fine Arts at Tsinghua University and Director of the Art and Technology Innovation Base, gave a speech as a representative of the judges. He stated that the significance of hosting creative innovation and entrepreneurship competitions is to provide students with more innovation ecosystems, and to provide diversified innovation experience sharing and guidance for Tsinghua's entrepreneurial teams. This process is extremely helpful for the cultivation of scientific and technological innovation talents and the future construction of talent ecology.
Liu Bo, General Manager and Managing Partner of Qidi Star Venture Capital, stated in a speech by the judges that he saw a lot of future value and possibilities in the project reports of his classmates. However, he must remember to think about its business model and investment value. He also looks forward to students truly entering the market, manufacturing and other industries in the future, and implementing their ideas into reality. We look forward to this moment together!
The outstanding performance of the students cannot be separated from the guidance of their mentors. For the 8 teams that have advanced to the finals, the organizer has invited more than 10 teachers and experts from Tsinghua and BMW to equip each team with a 1v1 mentor team to help the participating teams optimize their plans. The organizer also carefully designed and minted a personal digital collection of "mentor commemorative badges" for the mentor, bringing a special metaverse commemoration to this grand event of technology and art collision.
